Chad and I have four boys. So breaking up fights or settling squabbles is a daily struggle at our house.

Usually the boys involve us because somebody hurt somebody else. It’s a rule in our house that the minute you realize you’ve hurt somebody, you must say you’re sorry. More often than not what happened was an accident, but if they have not apologized before they start trying to get out of trouble, let’s just say correction is coming.

It’s a good principle for us too. How often do we go to God trying to explain away our actions or intentions? I wonder if God would prefer that we just say we’re sorry? Sorry we hurt Him or somebody else. Sorry we disobeyed. Sorrow communicates regret and turns our heart away from selfish defense and toward selfless compassion.
