Do you remember the names Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from your childhood Storybook Bible?
They were the three Hebrew young men thrown into the fiery furnace for refusing to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar. They were Israelites, but we know them by their Babylonian names. Why? King Nebuchadnezzar was trying to strip them of their identities and faith.
They weren’t influenced by the culture around them; their names could be changed but their faith couldn’t. They were rescued from the fiery furnace completely unharmed!
Their names don’t really matter. It’s their faith in God that made history. I don’t know about you, but when I’m gone I don’t really care if people remember my name. I’d like to be remembered for a faith that stands even through the fire.
